Review

"Dr. Kari Ragan in A Systematic Approach to Voice has produced an application-rich resource for voice teaching that is grounded both in science-informed pedagogy as well as in successful historic pedagogy and extensive studio experience.  Each topic is presented with economical explanations and teacher take-aways followed by multiple application exercises, all of which are clearly modeled on a high-quality companion website. This book offers an excellent exemplar of Dr. Ragan s tripartite evidence-based voice pedagogy (EBVP) construct. In sum, A Systematic Approach to Voice constitutes a valuable new resource, especially for the teaching practicum portion of vocal pedagogy courses." --Kenneth Bozeman, Frank C. Shattuck Professor of Music, Lawrence University

"Dr. Kari Ragan s A Systematic Approach to Voice: The Art of Studio Application is a gem that sets a standard of excellence for well-informed vocal pedagogy. Just as performing artists master technique or craft in the service of inspired creative expressive, so Dr. Ragan has invested deeply in understanding both vocal mechanics and scholarly principles of pedagogy, and has used those studies to hone the craft of her own teaching. She now offers a smart, generous, and skillfully organized guide to the unique art of teaching singing. Especially commendable are Ragan s distinction between warming up the voice (preparing to work) and more focused functional exercises; the level of detail provided for both basic technical exercises and suggested variations; and the final chapter of sample practice routines for singers of different styles and training levels. Her chapter on Registration demonstrates an unusual ease of navigation between the vocal requirements of classical and popular ( CCM ) singing, subtly challenging all teachers to overcome any lingering hesitation, and to support performers in both genres. Concise, yet brimming with knowledge and practicality, Dr. Ragan s book stands up well alongside vocal pedagogy classics of earlier generations. It deserves a place in the library of every 21 st century voice professional." --Joanna Cazden, MFA, MS-CCC, Singer, Speech Pathologist, Voice Specialist

This is a very good and thorough guide to the nuts and bolts of vocal pedagogy. Very helpful vocalises and exercises along with succinct but sufficient anatomical explanations. I would give the book 5 stars but it suffers from repeated identity politic phrases that muddle the authors intent at times. Other than that it is superb.

This is a fabulous book in the tradition of Richard Miller''s The Structure of Singing, but with inclusion of CCM techniques and discussion. Dr. Ragan fills the book with topic-by-topic description of aspects of singing with generous vocal and physical exercises to apply in the studio. A perfect resource for new voice teachers, and for those of us who are experienced and wish to implement fresh new ideas in our studios. I loved her concise, detailed writing style and her well-organized vocal exercise ideas. She recommends some interesting and useful props for breath work and resonance, as well. I have already recommended this book to my former students who have graduated and are out teaching others. A worthy volume that should become a new classic!
